Paid Family and Medical Leave

MTA is supporting the fight for the right to Paid Family and Medical Leave—ensuring they can take time off to care for a new child, a family member, or themselves without risking their financial security. This fight is about protecting workers, supporting families, and giving educators the stability they deserve while advancing equity in the workplace.

What is Paid Family and Medical Leave?

It's a program designed to help people in Massachusetts take paid time off of work for family or medical reasons.

Organizing for Parental and Family Leave

Across the state, MTA locals are prioritizing medical and parental leave in their local contract campaigns. Springfield special education teacher Rhonda Hall-Reynolds shared her heart wrenching story in an effort to elevate the issue in current negotiations between the Springfield Education Association and the district. Hall-Reynolds was put in an impossible position, having to drive between Springfield and Boston multiple times a week after her husband suffered cardiac arrest. Because Springfield had not opted into the state's Paid Family and Medical Leave program, she was unable take time off to assist her husband without forgoing her salary.
