Requirements

The program consists of 24 hours of training distributed among the following topics.
Members rally for fair contract

Bargaining Foundations
Approximately six class hours offered in a one-day session or multiple workshops. Bargaining Foundations will cover:

  • Strategies and Theories of Bargaining
  • An Overview of the Collective Bargaining Process
  • Power and Leverage
  • Preparing and Planning for Bargaining
  • Bargaining Team Roles and Functions
  • Platform Development and Proposal Writing
  • Tactics and Techniques for the Bargaining Table

Democratized Bargaining
Approximately six class hours offered in a one-day session or multiple workshops. Democratized Bargaining will cover:

  • Organizing for Power
  • Contract Action Campaigns
  • Power Analysis
  • Bargaining Councils
  • Expanded and Open Bargaining
  • Member Communications
  • Bargaining for the Common Good

Specialized Topics
This is a series of elective workshops (approximately three hours each) to explore issues in depth. Certificate candidates must take at least four such workshops, including but not limited to:

  • Educator Compensation
  • Contract Costing and Economic Indicators
  • Contract Language Lab
  • School and Municipal Finances
  • Advanced Bargaining Theory and Strategy
  • Economics of Higher Education Bargaining
  • Municipal Health Insurance
  • Education Support Professionals' Issues
  • Bargaining for the Common Good
  • Impact Bargaining

All of the Bargaining Certificate Program workshops will be interactive and provide opportunities for members to share their knowledge and experience with one another.
