Our Work

The Retired Members Committee identifies and pursues opportunities for retired educators to address issues of shared concern.
Wisdom Warriors Labor Day 2025

Currently, the committee is focused on:

  • Supporting BIPOC educators.
  • Ensuring a dignified retirement by fighting for cost-of-living increases.
  • Offering learning opportunities through a virtual speaker series.
  • Eliminating high-stakes testing.
  • Actively supporting local unions in contract negotiations.
  • Advocating for increased education funding.
  • Working to elect pro-education candidates to public office.
  • Supporting broader MTA initiatives.

This work not only shapes the future of education, but also ensures that retirees’ voices remain a vital part of key discussions.

Each year, elections are held to select representatives for the Retired Members Committee. The committee is composed of:

  • Eight retired members elected statewide by delegates at the Annual Meeting.
  • Statewide Retired District Director(s).
  • One Executive Committee retired member.
  • Two active members (not on the Board or Executive Committee), who are appointed by the MTA president.
  • One Board of Directors member, elected by the Board.
  • The MTA president or their designee.

We encourage you to get involved — run for election, join the committee, or attend a retiree event. Your voice matters, and your experience is invaluable.
