Regional and Retired Ethnic Minority Delegates

Regional ethnic minority delegates for active members to the MTA Annual Meeting are elected each year in March and April in conjunction with NEA delegate/Director elections.

Nomination and election process 

Regional ethnic minority delegates for active members to the MTA Annual Meeting are elected each year in March and April in conjunction with NEA delegate/Director elections. For retired members, two retired ethnic minority delegates will be elected in February and March, in conjunction with the retired delegate elections for NEA-RA and Annual Meeting. The 2026 Annual Meeting will take place May 8-9 at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston.

Who is eligible to run?

  • Nominations are open to active and retired members through a self-nomination process.
  • The allocation of regional ethnic minority delegates is based on MTA electoral regions and equal to the number of District Directors from each region. No more than one delegate from each district within a region will be elected, with the exception of 10B, 44H and Statewide Retired, which each have two seats.
  • Each candidate must be an active member within the region in which the candidate seeks office or must hold retired membership.
  • For 2025, there will be 50 seats for regional ethnic minority delegates and two seats for Retired Ethnic Minority Delegates. All terms will be for one year.

Deadline

Nominations will open in November 2025.

For Retired Ethnic Minority Delegate positions, the nomination deadline is 5 p.m., Friday, Jan. 9, 2026.

For Regional Ethnic Minority Delegate positions (among active members), the nomination deadline is 5 p.m., Friday, Feb. 6, 2026.

Reimbursement by the MTA

The MTA will reimburse up to $450 for eligible expenses incurred by each regional and retired ethnic minority delegate to the Annual Meeting.

More about the election

  • Ballots for ethnic minority delegates will be sent to all MTA members, accompanied by bio/statements and photos of candidates who submit them.
  • The regional vacancies are: Region A, seven vacancies; Region B, six vacancies; Region C, seven vacancies; Region D, six vacancies; Region E, five vacancies; Region F, six vacancies; Region G, six vacancies; and Region H, seven vacancies, and Statewide Retired, two vacancies.
